Joining Q+ has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had at Smith so far. As someone who has always been passionate about marketing, I was drawn to the club because it provided an opportunity for me to develop my creative skills while committing to a purposeful cause. During my role as the conference promoter on the executive team, I have had the chance to work on projects such as designing the club’s website, creating engaging social media posts, and brainstorming ways to promote our events. But these experiences have been about so much more than just professional development for me. They have truly strengthened my confidence in advocating for inclusion and equity in business.
I have seen firsthand how vital it is to create spaces where everyone feels supported and represented. When I first started business school, the lack of representation in both academic and the professional world was difficult to ignore. That gap made it clear to me how important it is to build a more inclusive environment, both during my time at Smith and as a future graduate in the workplace. Through Q+, I have gained valuable knowledge and skills to actively foster an inclusive environment for queer people throughout my professional life. The excellent turnout at Q+ events has been inspiring, demonstrating the incredible impact of creating inclusive spaces. Being part of Q+ has empowered me to speak up and engage the people in my life in meaningful EDII conversations.
One of the reasons I am especially proud to be a part of Q+ is the meaningful strides the club is making in addressing the lack of queer representation in business and beyond. While our initiatives are outlined on the club’s website, one aspect I find exciting is how we are reaching beyond business students at Smith and even beyond Queen’s. Students from other faculties, including some of my own friends, have joined Q+, and we have opened our events to people in any faculty. Students from other universities are welcome to attend the annual conference, and Q+ also works with many other clubs and organizations. This broader engagement amplifies queer representation across industries and creates a ripple effect that goes far beyond the tight-knit community at Smith.
Being part of Q+ has empowered me and made me feel part of a vibrant and supportive community. While advocacy is central to Q+’s mission, the club is also a space for anyone who wants to personally grow and develop skills in areas like marketing, finance, and leadership, while also making a difference. Whether you’re a business student or not, Q+ offers a unique opportunity to contribute to an inclusive future at Smith and Queen’s, while gaining invaluable professional experiences. You will also get to work alongside an amazing team. To anyone considering joining Q+, do it! You’ll find a welcoming community, the chance to make a real impact, and the confidence to carry the lessons you learn into every aspect of your life.
